Lake Malawi Yachting Marathon News

Dear Sailors,

The Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon Committee is pleased to announce the dates for the 2012 Lake Malawi Marathon. As good weather and wind conditions are more reliable in August the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon will take place from:

 Saturday 4th to Friday 10th August 2012

The committee is still working on a sailing route which will differ from previous years.  We expect that the marathon race will start in  Senga Bay (Salima) and will end in Chilumba, in the northern part of the Lake with no stop over on Likoma Island. As usual, the day before the race is for registration, boat and equipment inspection and capsize drills. The first leg of the race will commence   on Sunday 5th August 2012.

The Malawi Lake Marathon  2012 will be organized in such  way that it is  less dependent on sponsors to  ensure that in case  of a small  number of participants the marathon will still take place.

Prizes
There will be “class” prizes and overall winner prizes.   There must be three or more of the same type of boat to make up a class.  All boats that do not belong to a class will be included in the open class.

Transport of boats
In 2011 we were not able to get full sponsorship for a container to transport boats from South Africa. The committee will support any initiative to organize transport of boats from South-Africa or Tanzania.

The Malawi Lake Marathon Committee will send detailed information by the end of February2012.

We are looking forward welcoming you in 2012. Please don’t hesitate contacting us if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon Committee
